Top 5 Favorite YA Book Covers (so far)

I love books. I know, what a shocker. You’re shocked. I love everything about reading and books in general. Especially the covers.

Yeah, yeah, “don’t judge a book by its cover”, blah, blah, blah. Let’s be real. We all do it. If you are one of the rare unicorns who doesn’t, bravo. But I’m shallow and a sucker for a pretty cover, so that’s why I’m writing this list. For this week’s post, I decided to go through my bookshelves and try (keyword here is try) to narrow it down to my top five favorite covers. Most of what I read is YA, so these picks will reflect that. These won’t necessarily be in any order.

The first book that came to mind was Queen of Shadows by Sarah J. Maas. Note here that I haven’t read this one yet. More on that here. But when I ordered the series to binge read, this one immediately caught my eye. I love this cover. Normally, I’m not a huge fan of faces on covers, but this one gets away with it. The dark red and black cover combined with the lettering on the spine and that gorgeous velvety-feeling book jacket! Ah! I can’t get enough of this cover art. Hopefully, I’ll feel the same about the actual book when I read it.

Second is Winter by Marissa Meyer. I am actually currently reading this book! I adore the covers of the entire Lunar Chronicles series, but something about this one just really sticks out. The bright, almost-pinkish color of the apple with that iconic purple background just really does it for me. I love when a series really follows a theme with their cover arts and doesn’t randomly change themes halfway through the series and ruin your bookshelf aesthetic! (I’m looking at you, Delirium!)

Third is A Court of Mist and Fury (with A Court of Wings and Ruin a close runner-up) by Sarah J. Maas. Y’all had to know I was going to talk about this one. I freaking loved this series. Nesta is my favorite character and has been since day one, so I’m excited to see if a future book about her will feature her on the cover. But, we’re talking about ACOMAF here, so let’s get back to that. Blue is my favorite color which is why it has an edge over the others in the series. What I really love about these covers is if you look at them side by side, you can really see the progression and development of Feyre’s character throughout the books! Compare ACOTAR with ACOWAR, and you’ll really notice it! Plus, these covers have this digital fanart/tumblr-y feel to them that I really love.

Fourth is Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare. By now, you might be able to sense a pattern. I love jewel-tone covers. This one immediately catches my eye compared to the rest of the Shadowhunters books because it has that underwater/deep sea feel with the soft smoke (is that smoke? Or ink in water?) surrounding a girl with a sword. I grew up right by the beach, so this one has a special little place in my heart. Also, with these new paperbacks, the combined spines form a gorgeous black and white image of the characters. I love little details like that, which is why it is included in this list!

Fifth, and lastly, is Renegades by Marissa Meyer. Yeah, I know. I have two Marissa Meyer books on this list, but what can I say? Whoever designs her books is a freakin’ pro. Of course, if you know me, you know I am a sucker for YA fantasy. I can’t get enough of it. But, this one I had to get because of that cover. It feels so wonderfully sci-fi with its sharp lines and contrasting colors. It’s blue, so that helps! This one is definitely busier than the others, but that’s kind of why I like it so much. It sticks out on a shelf, and I feel myself wanting to choose it over the others in my TBR. The sequel, Archenemies, is also gorgeous too. I’m not the biggest fan of an entirely shiny cover, but this one utilizes it just enough so that it’s eye-catching!

  1. Loved this post, I’ve not read any of these but their covers are gorgeous, Renegades looks and sounds right up my street! X

  2. true story, i worked at my public library (it ruled- no due dates) and I was always seeing the Red Queen series come in with it’s beautiful but bloody crowns and I was so intrigued! Finally after seeing them pass by about 20 times I started reading. They were pretty good, until the last book- kind of a downer end after waiting a year to release it! But I judge books by covers all the time (not people tho) hahah

and I always say things like bring a book to sniff and NOBODY gets it!! You’d get it…..

  3. Number 3 and 4 are definitely my favourite. I like the cover for Lady Midnight because it’s scary, and I am really into scary.

  4. A book cover is literally everything! Sometimes a title is enough to draw me in- but usually it’s the cover!

  5. A book cover is great to interest me, it has to attract me. Great reviews! Thank you for sharing! Xx

  6. These are some great choices! Oh gosh I don’t know if I could narrow my favorite book covers to just 5! Maybe if I broke it down by year?! Lol! I still have yet to finish the ACOTAR series! I’m on the 3rd book and I’m taking FOREVER to finish!

  7. I like how honest you are . People always say don’t judge a book by its cover , but in reality the cover is what drives you to read the book in the first place. I totally agree . Some of these books caught my eye just by the cover alone. Great post.

  8. You chose such pretty covers! I’ve read the Throne of Glass series (except KoA) and I love it! I think the ACOTAR series is also pretty good. I’ve read Cinder but no other book in the Lunar Chronicles series. It’s great that you’re loving it!
